“It’s Not About Me” – Jose Brushes Off Praise As Spurs Pick Up The Win

|

With the November international break behind Tottenham Hotspur and a few of our international’s having success away from the club, Saturday’s return to Premier League action gave us an early kick off at the London Stadium as we faced off against Manuel Pellegrini’s West Ham United squad.

It looked like Mauricio Pochettino would be leading us into battle again until Tuesday evening arguably changed the shape of the club, and Daniel Levy pivoted to controversial Jose Mourinho.

Given our form and results in 2019, fans were hoping he had an immediate effect and arguably he did as goals from Son Heung-Min, Lucas Moura and Harry Kane gave us a 3-0 advantage. West Ham were pretty poor but finished strongly with two goals inside of the final 20 minutes to make it 3-2 and Mourinho may not have been looking at a debut win had VAR not scrubbed out another of their efforts.

Work to be done but a win’s a win.

Speaking to the BBC following his first game in charge, Mourinho said of the match.

“It’s not about me, it’s about the players and club. I will hate if somebody says ‘Jose made an impact’. I made no impact. Nothing. I just helped them a little bit to win this match. I think the team had 60 amazing minutes, total control, total dominance – using the principle we brought to the training sessions. Then they went a bit down, physically. I’m not blaming the coaching staff they had. I’m blaming the nature of things, national team weeks. Some players only arrived back yesterday.”
